What does Nikola Vucevic’s upcoming return to the Magic mean for the franchise?


ORLANDO, Fla. — The marriage between the Orlando Magic and center Nikola Vucevic will continue.

Vucevic intends to accept a four-year, $100 million contract offer from the Magic after the NBA’s free agency period opens at 6 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, The Athletic reported.

Vucevic has played seven of his eight NBA seasons with the Magic and ranks among the franchise’s career leaders in points, rebounds and games played.

But the 2018-19 season by far was his best season as a pro. New coach Steve Clifford designed the offense to utilize Vucevic’s versatility, and Vucevic responded by averaging career highs of 20.8 points, 12.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. He also improved as a 3-point shooter, sinking 36.4 percent of his attempts from deep.

Vucevic’s growth fueled the Magic’s best season in years. Orlando finished 42-40 and reached the playoffs for the first time since 2012.
