‘What a blow for him, for the Lakers’: DeMarcus Cousins’ crushing injury draws sympathy from Team USA


LOS ANGELES — As the Team USA men’s basketball squad held its latest session at the Lakers’ gorgeous practice facility Thursday, this brutal revelation was on ironic display: All of the players on that floor were getting the chance that DeMarcus Cousins will now miss out on.

They were all playing in the Lakers’ hoops offices, working in this place where they so proudly boast about those 16 trophies that sit in the window sills above the hardwood. This is where Cousins was supposed to have his latest renaissance, to show the basketball world that he could make it all the way back from this awful string of injuries — the Achilles tendon tear with New Orleans in February 2018, the quadriceps tear with Golden State that he endured before having some marvelous moments in the Finals — and return to form alongside LeBron James, Anthony Davis & Co.

And now, yet again, there’s this: A serious setback that could cost Cousins the entire season, this time an ACL…
