Wethington Sisters Inspire Each Other's Hockey Journeys

The Wethingtons played through the youth ranks, winning a state high school championship together, and will join forces again next year at Minnesota.

“It’s been great having the opportunity to play with my best friend,” Madeline added.

One of their dreams is to some day skate together for America.

“That would be a dream come true,” Audrey said. “It’s a dream come true to make the U18 team and represent the United States.”

While Audrey is a forward on the U18 team, Madeline recently trained with the women’s national team in Hartford, Connecticut, before returning home for the holidays. The sisters have thrived off each other climbing the hockey ranks, but there is one question they refuse to answer — who’s the better player?

“We are both different players,” Audrey said. “We’ve always played different positions.

“Growing up [going against each other] that’s made us better,” she added. “I’ve learned a lot of stuff from her.”

Madeline has a standard answer for such a question.

“She’s my sister, she’s a really good player and we play different positions,” she said.

In fact, playing different positions allows the sisters to offer each other “tips” as either teammates or after watching each other play.

Madeline often takes the 20-minute drive home from college to watch her younger sisters’ games. And not only do the older sisters play, but younger sisters, Jaqueline and Adeline, are active in the sport, too.

“We try to be really good role models,” Madeline said.

The oldest sister has already struck gold with the U18 team, picking up three straight medals from 2016-18 at the Under-18 World Championship.

Audrey Wethington is searching for her first gold medal, having taken silver with the U.S. team in Japan. When the tournament begins Thursday, she will have no doubt have a fan back home coaching her along the way.

“I would do the same thing for her,” Audrey said. “I can’t wait to play with her again.”
