NORMAL, Ill. – Weibring Golf Club will host kids from the Bloomington-Normal YMCA Summer Camp on Wednesday, July 21, for its inaugural ‘First Green’ event.

First Green is a program of the GCSAA Foundation, the philanthropic organization of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA). It is an innovative environmental and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education outreach program using golf courses as environmental learning labs. Golf Course Superintendents and/or local golf course representatives host students on field trips where they test water quality, collect soil samples, identify plants, design plantings, assist in stream bed restoration and are involved in the ecology and environmental aspects of the golf course. The students are also introduced to many other aspects of the game of golf.

“We are very excited to showcase our course and create a fun learning environment for the YMCA Summer Camp,” Assistant Athletics Director/Golf Course & Turf Sciences Travis Williams said. “This opportunity is a perfect intersection of community support, education, and growing the game of golf.  STEM education is in every aspect of my job as a golf course manager. I hope the kids see how math and science is a part of everyday life and can be applied towards a fun sport like golf.”

The event will begin at 10 a.m., with campers learning at four different stations located around the golf course about area math calculations, new technology tools used to manage a putting green, a soil demonstration, and an insect collection station. Campers will also have a change to learn about how to play golf by chipping and putting at the short-game practice area. Weibring Golf Club Head Golf Professional Tom Szymoniak, golf course staff and members of ISU’s Department of Agriculture will assist Williams with the event and impart their expertise.
