We Have More Details About Tegan and Sara’s Forthcoming TV Series

Last year, news that Tegan and Sara Quin’s 2019 memoir High School would be adapted into a TV show by Clea DuVall sent the queer internet into a tizzy. Now we have more details on when to expect the show, and where fans can see the fictionalized adventures of the beloved Canadian indie pop duo on screens.

Variety reports that IMDb TV, a free, ad-supported streaming service, announced they’d greenlit the series Monday, with Tegan and Sara as executive producers and DuVall set to write and direct. High School is set in Calgary, Alberta, and explores grunge and rave culture in the ‘90s as told by the identical twins from alternating perspectives chapter-by-chapter. The memoir also covers topics of divorce, emotional breakdown, and the exploration of sexuality.

DuVall is a queer icon herself, best known for roles in But I’m a Cheerleader, The Handmaid’s Tale, and more, and as the director and co-writer of last year’s Happiest Season, a queer holiday rom-com starring Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis. Beyond High School, she’s got a full plate, as an executive producer and voice actor of Fox’s animated comedy series HouseBroken.

Tegan and Sara took to Twitter on May 3 to confirm the news. “No one is more shocked than us, that after a VERY difficult couple years in high school, doing copious amounts of drugs, skipping school, lying + being all around degenerates that we made it this far in our musical journey. THAT story is headed to @IMDbTV.”

The pair also (sadly) waved off any possibility that they’d star in the show itself. “Guyssss the nmemoir is about us in high school in the 90’s. We are 40. I know we look youngish but we don’t look THAT young. Plus @cleaduvall said no,” they tweeted Tuesday.

In a statement, IMDb TV’s co-heads of content, Ryan Pirozzi and Lauren Anderson, said, “Tegan and Sara’s honest, vulnerable and deeply engaging memoir has captivated readers and we look forward to their authentic voice and Clea’s unique perspective being brought to life in this adaptation.”

A premiere date has not yet been set for the series.
