WATCH: Jon Rahm's epic one-hop ace in Mexico is a must-see moment

Low rounds have been the norm over the past two days at the WGC-Mexico Championship’s Club de Golf Chapultepec. Rory McIlroy led the field by two shots after an opening 65 on Thursday, and Erik van Rooyen lit up the course with nine birdies en route to a second-round 62 on Friday.

But Jon Rahm topped even that sizzling score on Saturday, carding nine birdies and an epic ace (on his 17th hole, no less) to sign for a round of 10-under-par 61 — a milestone round for several reasons. For starters, Rahm is now the course-record holder at Chapultepec, meaning his round on Saturday is also the lowest round that’s ever been shot at the WGC-Mexico Championship. And to top it off, the 61 is the new lowest round of Rahm’s PGA Tour career (though he’s managed a round of 62 three different times.)

Rahm started his round with some fantastic moxie, going six under in his first seven holes. A three-putt bogey on No. 7 threatened to derail his momentum, but he soldiered on with three more birdies on his back nine before dunking a euphoric ace on the 158-yard 17th.

“With the start I had today, the only thing in mind was trying to get as close as possible to the leaders,” Rahm told the PGA Tour’s Cameron Morfit after his round. “I think a lot of us like to talk sometimes about how unlucky we get, and I think today was one of those days where I got fortunate. I hit the right shots and I got the right bounces, and I took advantage of it.”

Rahm is now T4 at 11 under par overall (four shots behind Justin Thomas’ lead) heading into the final round.
