Washington staves off late comeback by Russell Wilson, Seahawks for 17-15 win

The Washington Football Team survived two late scares in the final seconds — an unsuccessful two-point conversion and then a recovered onside kick that was later overturned with a flag — on Monday night to defeat the Seattle Seahawks,17-15, from FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland. The win puts Washington at 5-6 on the season and in the final NFC wild-card spot.

That result didn’t come easy for Washington. Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson, down nine points, led a final drive from his own four-yard line with 2:25 remaining that culminated in a 32-yard touchdown pass to receiver Freddie Swain. On the two-point attempt, he threw into tight coverage for DK Metcalf but was picked off by Washington cornerback Kendall Fuller.

The game appeared all but over. But Seattle recovered its onside attempt with 15 seconds remaining. An illegal formation penalty, however, forced the Seahawks to rekick and Washington recovered it to seal the victory.

The Football Team’s defense caused problems for Seattle all night. Wilson, constantly under pressure, was 20 of 41 for and 247 yards and two touchdowns. His lone score until that final drive came on a six-yard pass to tight end Gerald Everett at the end of the first quarter.

The Seahawks only ran 45 offensive plays compared to Washington’s 79.

Washington quarterback Taylor Heinicke had another solid performance, going 27 of 35 for 233 yards with an interception and two touchdown passes to running back J.D. McKissic. Running back Antonio Gibson had 111 yards rushing on the night.

The WFT played most of the game without kicker Joey Slye, who injured his hamstring while attempting to make a tackle on a blocked extra point in the second quarter that was taken back for a two-point conversion.
