‘Washing your own kit keeps us all grounded’


Jon Stead played in the Premier League for three different clubs. He also won 11 England Under-21s caps and was part of arguably the biggest FA Cup upset of the past decade.

That impressive pedigree, however, has not prevented the 37-year-old Harrogate Town forward, with sweeping brush in hand, from having to spend this week on dressing room duties. And Stead wouldn’t have had it any other way.

“We have a rota,” he explains to The Athletic. “Four at a time, split to clean the two changing rooms we use due to COVID. This week it is me and Connor Kirby, my partner in crime from the car school, looking after one changing room as another two of the lads do the other.

“That rota includes the staff, meaning there is a week when the gaffer (Simon Weaver) and his assistant (Paul Thirlwell) are sweeping the changing room. That’s when things are left that little bit more mucky than usual, extra bits of strapping tape left about and…
