Warriors guard D'Angelo Russell sprains thumb, set to have MRI

The Warriors‘ tough start to the season continued with a loss to the Celtics Friday night and their injury woes have not slowed, either.

Point guard D’Angelo Russell sprained his right thumb during the game.

While X-rays were negative, Russell is set to undergo an MRI on Saturday. If Russell were to miss an extended stretch, it would further deplete an already compromised Golden State roster.

Guard Stephen Curry, who sustained a broken hand, may not play again this season, and if he does, it would likely not be until the spring. Shooting guard Klay Thompson is likely to miss all season due to a torn ACL he suffered during the NBA Finals last season. Even forward Draymond Green has had some injury problems and likely to see a minutes restriction this year.

At this juncture, Russell, 23, is averaging a career-best 24.3 points and 6.7 assists through 10 games. The Warriors could explore trading Russell at some point this season, which early on has all the makings of a rebuilding season for Golden State.
