The end is always ugly. There is no other way for it to be.

This Knicks season is no exception. It ended quietly Wednesday, in a half-full arena, in front of a drained crowd. These Knicks had rejuvenated a franchise, breathing fresh air into an organization that needed a new life, but there was no moment of appreciation at Madison Square Garden, only despondence at a playoff run snuffed out in just five games.

They walked off quickly and took the exit from the side door, disappearing through the tunnel on the Eighth Avenue side. Derrick Rose, his arm draped over Leon Rose, will be the last seen of this team. A season that disappeared almost as unexpectedly as it unfurled itself.

Ultimately, they were vexed and vanquished by Trae Young. He took a bow at center court late in the fourth quarter, soaking in the bile that came his way. He had earned it.
