WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Say this about Virginia Tech’s first four games: The Hokies may not have been perfect in all of them and certainly weren’t up to the task with a short-handed defense at North Carolina, but they rarely beat themselves.
That wasn’t the case in a mistake-filled 23-16 upset loss to Wake Forest at Truist Field on Saturday, one that included more than 100 yards of penalties and as flat of an offensive performance as the Hokies have had this year.
No. 19 Virginia Tech (3-2, 3-2 ACC) threw three interceptions, repeatedly bogged down in Wake Forest territory, missed two field goals and committed an uncharacteristic 10 penalties for 112 yards, losing its head on a few occasions with some poorly timed 15-yarders that were entirely avoidable.
