This is the moment a daring and selfless painter jumps into a freezing canal in nothing but his socks and boxer shorts to rescue a drowning deer.

Marc Headon, 27, is seen pulling the struggling deer to the bank where colleague Jamie Toyne helped it onto dry land.

The hero then gets the soaking wet animal back to its feet and tries to reassure it.

The video has been seen by more than 600,000 people after Jamie uploaded it to Facebook last night.

He said: ‘Madness just driving past the canal in Saxilby [Lincolnshire], and saw some ears in the water.

‘We got out and saw it was a baby dear struggling to keep its head up.

‘It was seconds away from drowning must have been in there for hours. Marc jumped straight in and saved it.’

The clip shows Jamie encouraging Marc as he swims to save the baby deer, puts his arm around it and pulls it to safety.

At this point point Jamie stops filming to help Marc get it onto the embankment.

He stayed in his underwear for nearly 40 minutes as he stuck with the deer while they called emergency services.

The two workmen from Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, put the deer in their van and took it to a friends house nearby so they could give an exact location to deer handlers.

The deer was taken to safety an hour later and the men received a call commending them for ‘saving the deer’s life’.

People on social media praised Marc for his bravery, calling him a ‘real hero and a real man’ who ‘did something so beautiful’.

Marc says they spotted the animal on the way back from work when they decided to intervene.

He said: ‘It was just struggling to swim and keep its head up.

‘I didn’t really think about it I just jumped in. The water was freezing.

‘It was good to save a deer it makes me feel really proud.

‘We actually thought it was going to die as it was shaking and couldn’t get up onto its feet.

‘It was just exhausted. It was just shivering all the time. We couldn’t leave it for a second as we were worried it would wake up and run onto the road after I carried it up the side of the bank.’
