Victoria Racing Club Adding $1 Million To Equine Wellbeing Fund

The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) has committed $1 million to the newly established Equine Wellbeing Fund (EWF). Commitment to the health and safety of racehorses has been a core tenant of the club, but new initiatives have been undertaken to focus more heavily on this topic.

Thus far, the funds will be dispersed in various ways: The Living Legends program, a sanctuary for some retired racehorses where they can be viewed by the public, will receive $220,000 over the next three years. An educational hub in Flemington will be built to showcase two Living Legends on race days, as well.

The EWF will also help fund the VRC to upgrade its facilities for post-race recovery horses, including the installation of cooling aids in the tunnel; misting fans in stalls, the addition of staff to help hose horses after they race and the availability of ice boots to all horses post-race have already been instated.

The VRC Equine Wellbeing Fund will fast-track many of the initiatives that have been in planning phases. Also in the works are a national tracking program for racehorses and a rehoming initiative once the horses retire from racing.
