Vanderbilt’s Sarah Fuller kicks off, becomes first woman to play in Power 5 game


COLUMBIA, Mo. — Vanderbilt’s Sarah Fuller first ran onto Faurot Field 90 minutes before kickoff. The goalkeeper-turned-place kicker stretched in Missouri’s north end zone before jogging to the 20-yard line, then walked back to the goal line doing leg raises.

The senior, less than a week into her football career, was on the brink of history: No woman had ever played in a Power 5 football game.

Fuller, listed at 6-foot-2 and known on the soccer field for her booming leg, went back to the locker room after stretching and returned 20 minutes later in full uniform. She warmed up her leg from extra point distance, working with holder Harrison Smith, who doubles as the Commodores’ punter. Fuller already has a nickname, according to coach Derek Mason: Champ.
