Van Morrison slams 'fascist bullies' in new protest songs against coronavirus lockdowns

Singer Van Morrison slams the U.K. government as “fascist bullies” in a new song protesting the coronavirus lockdowns.

The “Brown Eyed Girl” singer plans to release three new protest songs this month called, “Born To Be Free,” “As I Walked Out,” and “No More Lockdown” in a protest against government overreach during the pandemic.

In the song “No More Lockdown,” which was previewed by The Guardian, Mr. Morrison sings, “No more lockdown, no more government overreach, no more fascist bullies, no disturbing our peace. No more taking of our freedom, and our God-given rights, pretending it’s for our safety, when it’s really to enslave.”

Mr. Morrison will debut the new tracks this month at his upcoming shows in the London Palladium.

“I’m not telling people what to do or think, the government is doing a great job of that already,” the singer said in a press release. “It’s about freedom of choice, I believe people should have the right to think for themselves.”

Mr. Morrison has been an outspoken opponent of the widespread lockdowns, issuing a call last month for fellow musicians to “fight the pseudo-science” and band together in support of reopening live music venues.

Mr. Morrison said he fears that with no reopening date in sight, many venues will shut down for good.

“I call on my fellow singers, musicians, writers, producers, promoters and others in the industry to fight with me on this,” he wrote on his website in August. “Come forward, stand up, fight the pseudo-science and speak up.”

Mr. Morrison said he agreed to play “socially distanced gigs” in London but that his participation was not an endorsement of current health orders.

“This is not a sign of compliance or acceptance of the current state of affairs, this is to get my band up and running and out of the doldrums,” he wrote at the time. “This is also not the answer going forward. We need to be playing to full capacity audiences going forward.”
