USMNT drops friendly 2-1 to Switzerland

The U.S. men’s national team dropped their friendly to Switzerland 2-1 on Sunday in the team’s final match ahead of the CONCACAF Nations League Final Four.

The Americans got on the board first with a goal from Sebastian Lletget. It was the 28-year-old midfielder’s seventh national team goal and third of 2021. But the Swiss responded shortly after with a goal from Ricardo Rodriguez to knot the game.

Switzerland had a chance to take the lead in the first half after Sergiño Dest was whistled for a handball and the Swiss were awarded a penalty.

Rodriguez missed the penalty shot, pulling it wide of the right goalpost to keep the game tied at 1-1. The USMNT had chances in the second half, including from Gio Reyna whose shot on goal went off the right post.

But it was Switzerland’s Steve Zuber who found the net for the go-ahead goal after miscommunication from the USMNT gave him a scoring opportunity.

Both teams finished with 11 shots and five shots on target each, but the USMNT had five corners to Switzerland’s one.

The USMNT did not have forward Christian Pulisic, who helped Chelsea win the Champions League with a 1–0 win over Manchester City on Saturday.

This is a developing story. More to come.
