USC mailbag: Caleb Williams’ transfer portal possibilities, Lincoln Riley’s roster turnover and chasing down Utah

LOS ANGELES — Monday was a pretty active day at USC, with the announcement of a new coaching staff, Jaxson Dart’s entrance into the transfer portal and Michael Trigg’s declaration that he would follow Dart out the door.

It’s been relatively quiet since, but our readers have had plenty of questions to help fill the void. Let’s get to them.

What is the plan if Caleb Williams doesn’t transfer to SC?

Joshua P.

I have not spoken to Lincoln Riley, so I won’t pretend to know. USC, as a whole, has been silent about Caleb Williams and its pursuit of him.

If the former Oklahoma star doesn’t transfer to USC, that would obviously be a big blow for the Trojans’ quarterback room, especially in the wake of Dart’s departure. My hunch is they would look for another quarterback in the transfer portal immediately because at that point, they would only have two scholarship quarterbacks: Miller Moss and Mo Hasan.

USC would need another one just for depth purposes alone. And I think it would be a pretty attractive transfer destination for quarterbacks over the next few months, between the open path toward starting and the opportunity to play for Riley, whose success developing quarterbacks speaks for itself.
