University Of Arizona To Open Veterinary School

The American Veterinary Medical Association has given the University of Arizona (UA) the go-ahead to open a college of veterinary medicine in Oro Valley. The college can now begin enrolling students in Arizona’s first public veterinary medicine college; there is a private veterinary medicine program at Midwestern University.

This was the college’s third attempt for accreditation. The first attempt was denied in 2016 because of lack of proof of long-term financial viability, inadequate recruiting and staffing plans, unanswered questions about student learning opportunities and lack of a high-quality research program.

The UA program differs from most traditional vet-med programs in that it trains students for the profession in three years instead of four, having them attend school year-round. Much of the training takes place off-site, in places like the Reid Park Zoo.

The veterinary medicine college is of great interest to Arizona as it has four regions that are declared as having veterinary shortages. It is hoped that the students who are trained in the state will remain there to practice veterinary medicine.
