U.S. Women's Open: Nelly Korda, Michelle Wie West among those who won't play the weekend at Olympic

U.S. Women's Open

SAN FRANCISCO — The week began with great buzz surrounding the Korda family with sisters Nelly and Jessica paired together for the first time in a major at The Olympic Club.

Younger brother Sebastian Korda won his first ATP title last week, becoming the first American man in 11 years to lift a trophy on European clay.

Would a Korda sister break through at the 76th U.S. Women’s Open to carry on the family momentum?

On Friday, the cut fell at 6 over, with the top 60 and ties moving on to the weekend.

That means Jessica will play the weekend. She’s T-36 after rounds of 72-74.

But she won’t be joined by Nelly, who shot 78-75 to miss the cut by five strokes. The 23-year-old has now made 25 starts in major championships, with three top-3 finishes. Her best U.S. Women’s Open finish is a tie for 10th in 2018.

The 2020 U.S. Women’s Open champion opened with a 79 and nearly found a way to stick around for the weekend, missing the cut by a single shot. Kim bogeyed her final hole on Friday.

Michelle Wie West carded only two birdies in 36 holes on the Lake Course. Her second-round 80 included two doubles and 36 putts. She has yet to make a cut since returning from maternity leave. Wie West plans to compete next week in the LPGA Mediheal Championship on her home course of Lake Merced.

Paula Creamer, competing on a special exemption, shot 75-76 to miss the cut. She hit a total of 16 greens over the course of two days. This week’s USWO marked her second start since October of 2019. She will also be in the field at next week’s Mediheal event.

Sophia Popov

After a marathon week at the match play event in Las Vegas, in which Popov lost in the final to Ally Ewing, her time at Olympic came to a premature end. Popov recorded four double-bogeys in two rounds to miss the cut by two strokes. It’s her first MC in a major since she won the AIG Women’s British Open last summer. While she hit 75 percent of her fairways, Popov hit 19 greens over the course of two days and took 59 putts.
