U.S. Under-18 Select Team Defeats Canada 3-2 in OT

Team USA outshot Canada 11-3 in the first period, but the game remained scoreless going into the second stanza. Seven minutes into the second period, U.S. goaltender Amanda Thiele (Milford, Mich.) made a sprawling pad save to preserve the score at 0-0.

Less than a minute after Thiele’s crucial save, Canada grabbed the first lead of the game just under eight minutes into the middle frame. With just over five minutes to play in the second, Kiara Zanon (Rochester, N.Y.) almost knotted the score for Team USA, but her shot was knocked away by Canadian goaltender Jessie McPherson.

Despite Canada having a 1-0 lead heading into the third period, Danielle Burgen (Chisago Lakes, Minn.) netted the equalizer for Team USA just over six minutes into third period off a pass from Peyton Hemp (Andover, Minn.).

Two goals were scored in the final minute of the game. Canada’s Maddi Wheeler scored with 49 seconds left to play in the game to take a 2-1 lead, but Murphy notched Team USA’s second equalizer of the game with just two seconds left on the clock to force overtime.

Just over a minute into the overtime period, Murphy found the back of the net again with a slap shot from the top of the circles. For the complete box score, click here.
