U.S. Open: Richard Brand, Russell Henley tied for lead entering third round

Who is Richard Bland?

Hugh Kellenberger, senior managing editor, college basketball and golf: The 48-year-old Englishman became the oldest first-time winner in the European Tour’s history at the British Masters, earning himself a spot in the U.S. Open as a result. He is a journeyman’s journeyman, a guy who has just grinded this thing out trying to make enough cuts to keep his Euro tour card — and repeatedly getting it back when he lost it. So how does a guy like that co-lead the U.S. Open? He’s first in the field in shots gained putting (4.66) this week. He has not missed a putt within 10 feet.

Friday’s big winner(s)

Kellenberger: Bland, clearly. Matthew Wolff, who birded 18 to move to 4 under, tied for third. Watson shot a 67 to get himself to 3 under and two behind the leaders. That’s huge. Twenty-three of the last 25 U.S. Open winners were within two shots of the lead after 36 holes, and 24 were in the top six. Chances are the winner will be one of Bland, Henley, Wolff, Louis Oosthuizen, Watson and Rahm.
