Tyrone Mings injury: Aston Villa defender misses Crystal Palace after shin injury

How did Mings sustain the injury?

It is believed he picked up the knock in a challenge with Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin on Thursday night.

Mings managed to play out the full 90 of that game, but was visibly in pain after the final whistle.

He was pictured on the floor holding his shin at full-time.

What has been said?

Dean Smith explained the injury ahead of the game against Palace on Sunday.

The Villa manager said: “He took a knock against Everton. He was still too sore to travel.

“He should be ready for the Tottenham game.”

What happened in the game against Palace?

Palace scored twice in the second half to secure victory during an engrossing affair between the two mid-table sides at Villa Park.

Both teams started brightly but it was Villa who opened the scoring through John McGinn’s tidy finish in the 17th minute. Christian Benteke leveled the scoreline shortly after with a headed goal against his former club.

Anwar El Ghazi, who was recently recalled to the Holland squad, then cropped up at the back-post later in the first half to restore Smith’s side’s lead.

Palace rallied late on and were rewarded with 15 minutes remaining when Wilfried Zaha drove at the heart of Palace’s defence before his effort deflected in of Villa defender Ahmed Elmohamady. Tyrick Mitchell then bundled home the winner in the 84th minute from Eberechi Eze’s cross, denying Villa a first league double over Palace since the 1980-81 season.

How much of a loss is Mings?

It’s a relatively big deal. Mings last missed a Premier League game on December 28 last year, when Villa drew 1-1 with Chelsea. He was suspended for that game after two yellow cards against Palace on December 26.

He has played in a run of 22 straight league games for Smith’s side.

Kortney Hause was given an opportunity to impress in Mings’s place.
