Two more horses in the second quarantined barn at Remington Park tested positive for EHV-1 earlier this week, according to an update from the Equine Disease Communication Center. There have been approximately 60 horses quarantined there since Nov. 20.
The track had a total of two barns under quarantine for the highly contagious disease. The first barn had its quarantine released last week after there were no new positives there.
The Kentucky Department of Agriculture released a statement Friday that while the situation seems to be improving, it would not be lifting its barn on Remington shippers into the state’s tracks or training centers. A number of other tracks individually announced bans on horses coming from the track.
The KDA’s statement reads:
While the situation at Remington Park Racetrack appears to be improving (EDCC alert #1544) with release of the index barn and no known spread beyond the second quarantined barn, the test results indicate that there is a risk that the virus continues circulate in the environment. The Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s current policy of restricting horses entering Kentucky tracks or training centers is unchanged. Requests to move horses from Remington to a Kentucky track or their associated training centers will be considered on an individual basis. The KDA position will remain as currently written through the remainder of this calendar year.
