Trump news – live: Trump calls for Mar-a-Lago warrant release as reports say FBI raid sought nuclear documents

Trump lawyer does not ‘believe’ that secret nuclear documents found at Mar-a-Lago

Donald Trump said late on Thursday that he won’t oppose a move by the Justice Department to make public the search warrant for Monday’s FBI raid on his Florida residence.

“Not only will I not oppose the release of documents related to the unAmerican, unwarranted, and unnecessary raid and break-in of my home in Palm Beach, Florida, Mar-a-Lago, I am going a step further by ENCOURAGING the immediate release of those documents,” he wrote on Truth Social.

“Release the documents now!”

The Department of Justice has filed a motion to unseal the search warrant used by federal agents to seize papers from the former president’s Florida home. Attorney general Merrick Garland announced the move earlier on Thursday, stressing that the decision was not taken lightly and that he personally authorised the decision to seek the warrant.

The former president and some members of his legal team have claimed without providing proof that agents may have planted evidence at his home. New reports have said that FBI agents were looking for “classified nuclear documents” during the raid.

Reports say FBI sought ‘classified nuclear documents’ at Mar-a-Lago

FBI agents were looking for “classified nuclear documents” during their dramatic search of Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home, according to sources familiar with the investigation.

The news comes via a report in The Washington Post, and adds a new layer of seriousness to the FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago less than a week ago.

Up until now, Republicans had an avenue to argue that this was a politicised move meant to embarrass an ex-president over an issue that would normally be low in priority. But many Republicans on Capitol Hill, even allies of the former president, will be hard-pressed to give a good explanation for why documents about the nuclear capabilities of the US or another country could be stored at Mar-a-Lago under any acceptable circumstances.

Mary Trump says her uncle has underestimated “ninja” Merrick Garland

Psychologist Mary Trump, who has for several years tried to explain her uncle’s supposed “pathology” and his habit of fixating on myriad enemies and grievances, appeared on MSNBC last night to discuss the ex-president’s reaction to the raid – and she had an interesting theory to float: that Mr Trump’s idiosyncratic ideas about strength and weakness leave him incapable of grasping that Merrick Garland may pose him a serious threat.

Trump backs warrant release on Truth Social

The debate over why Donald Trump has not released the Mar-a-Lago search warrant may soon be at an end, with the ex-president saying last night he will is in fact “ENCOURAGING the immediate release of those documents”, which he insists were drawn up by political opponents.

It is likely that if released, the warrant will be at least lightly redacted. Interest is increasingly turning to the affadavit underpinning the “probable cause” element of the warrant, but is hard to see that being released in the near future because of the sensitivity of the documents at issue.

Mr Trump did not stop at one message calling for the warrant to be unleashed, but “truthed” twice more about the supposedly unjustified raid and the need to have it explained in public – again not acknowledging that he himself could release the warrant if he liked.

Fox News host shows photoshopped image of Mar-a-Lago judge with Ghislaine Maxwell

Filling in last night on Tucker Carlson’s show, Fox News host Brian Kilmeade included a segment on Bruce Reinhart, the judge who apparoved the FBI’s search warrant for the Mar-a-Lago raid – and at one point, things went badly off the rails.

As he delivered a monologue to camera, Mr Kilmeade’s production team screened a picture purporting to show Mr Reinhart receiving a foot massage from convicted sexual abuser and trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell. The problem? Mr Reinhart had been (badly) photoshopped in to replace Jeffrey Epstein. The URL of a meme-making site was even visible.

After the image appeared on screen, Mr Kilmeade began stumbling over his words.

Mr Reinhart has received a deluge of violent and anti-semitic death threats since he was identified as the signer of the warrant. So serious are the threats that his details have been removed from the website of the court where he serves.

DoJ asks court to unseal search warrant for Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club

Attorney General Merrick Garland on Thursday said the Department of Justice has asked a federal court in Florida to unseal the search warrant for former president Donald Trump’s home at Mar-a-Lago, the Palm Beach, Florida mansion turned private club where he maintains his primary residence.

Mr Garland said the department was asking the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida to unseal the warrant, which authorised a “court-approved” search for classified documents at Mr Trump’s home, “in light of the former president’s public confirmation with the search the surrounding circumstances, and the substantial public interest in this matter”.

Andrew Feinberg watched the attorney general’s press briefing.

Trump was previously subpoenaed for classified docs sought in FBI Mar-a-Lago raid

Federal investigators attempted to retrieve highly classified documents that Donald Trump improperly removed from the White House by presenting him with a grand jury subpoena this past spring, months before FBI agents would execute a search warrant at his Palm Beach, Florida home.

The existence of the subpoena, which was issued by a Washington DC grand jury and used by Department of Justice investigators to retrieve some — but not all — of the documents sought from Mr Trump’s home, was first reported by John Solomon, a right-wing journalist who Mr Trump named as one of his official representatives to the National Archives and Records Administration just before his term expired last January.

Andrew Feinberg has the details.

Lara Trump: Mar-a-Lago search ‘outrageous’ even if her father hid nuclear secrets there

Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law Lara Trump has expressed anger at the FBI raid on the former president’s Mar-a-Lago residence and said even if there were “classified nuclear documents”, the searches were still “outrageous”.

Trump hires celebrity attorney who dubs himself the ‘Billion Dollar Lawyer’

Former president Donald Trump has hired a lawyer well-known for representing hip-hop artists and who previously accused him of being being a racist, The New York Times reported.

Mr Trump hired Drew Findling to represent him for a case regarding the former president’s attempts to interfere with the 2020 election results in Georgia. Mr Findling has represented hip-hop artists such as Cardi B, Gucci Mane and Migos, earning the moniker, “#BillionDollarLawyer”.

Trump and family watched FBI Mar-a-Lago search on security cameras, attorney says

Donald Trump’s attorney Christina Bobb said the former president and his family watched the search in his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida on a security camera from their New York home.

Ms Bobb said the ex-president and his family “probably had a better view than I did because they had the CCTV they were able to watch. I was stuck in a parking lot”.

They were actually able to see the whole thing, she added.

“They actually have a better idea of what took place inside,” she said on Real America’s Voice.

Has someone in Trump’s inner circle flipped?

With each passing day, it becomes harder for a casual observer to distinguish between the post-presidential life of Donald Trump and that of late-season Tony Soprano.

In the past week alone, Mr Trump’s home has been searched by the FBI as part of an investigation into his handling of classified documents, he pled the Fifth Amendment in a separate case into his business dealings in New York, and now, according to several reports, he is trying to flush out a rat in his inner circle.

“Trumpworld is abuzz with speculation about which close aide or aides has ‘flipped’ and provided additional sensitive information to the FBI about what former President Trump was keeping at Mar-a-Lago,” Axios reported this morning, citing several sources.
