Tough tech: how businesses can stay protected and connected

With a sense of normality gradually resuming, companies across the country are juggling a new way of working. Inevitably, many organisations and businesses – including our courageous frontline and field workers – are relying on mobile and hybrid working to get them through the day.

With months of lost earnings to recover and Covid-safe operations to juggle, such hardwearing mobile technology is critical for every industry – particularly for those working in client-facing roles or out in the field. These are the workers who show up and perform every day, no matter what the conditions.

For Chris Torpey and Craig Pennington, co-founders of Future Yards – an innovative 350-person capacity music and arts venue based in Birkenhead – reliable mobile technology is essential to their work. The pair organise regular shows at their busy venue – alongside hiring out their studio space and leading a light and sound mixing internship for young people from the local area.

Their complex onsite operation means constantly alternating between business planning, gig production, teaching and bookings management – and Chris and Craig have opted for the Samsung Rugged range – including the Galaxy XCover 5, Galaxy Tab Active3, Galaxy XCover Pro and the Galaxy Tab Active Pro – to work wonders across their operation, knowing these devices will endure the chaos and mishaps of a life under pressure.

Security and data management

With Samsung’s Knox security platform built into every device, the Future Yards team can be confident all client data is protected from the moment it’s switched on. While protected from malware and malicious threats, data is also isolated and encrypted within the device – ensuring peace of mind if a device is lost or stolen.

A Mobile Point-of-Sale (MPOS*) capability can connect to any Point-of-Sale facility to allow fast on-the-spot payment for customers. A user-friendly ‘S Pen’* is also available for the Samsung Tab Active range, to collect signatures if needed. The handy barcode scanning* ability, typically used by delivery and retail industries, has allowed Chris and Craig to switch to Covid-safe measures since reopening the venue – securely managing their ticketing systems and facilitating entry for events and gigs.

Meanwhile, the programmable key* on the Galaxy XCover Pro and XCover 5 works in conjunction with Microsoft Teams to transform mobile devices into a walkie-talkie – with a ‘push-to-talk’ feature allowing the team to communicate around the venue without unlocking their device. The perfect tool for when on the run on those busy and loud show nights.

No matter the environment

All Rugged devices come with glove-friendly touchscreen sensitivity, facial recognition for easy unlocking, which work wonders for the Future Yards security team who spend many a winter Wirral night on the door, shifting between booking systems and ticketing lists.

Those on longer shifts will appreciate the Rugged range’s long-lasting battery power. Although, anyone needing additional charge can simply carry a replaceable battery* for a seamless switch of power without the worry of downtime.

In addition, Samsung’s Rugged technology is hardwearing and versatile – with each model put through rigorous testing to US military (MIL-STD 810*) standards, and able to survive a 1.2 metre drop onto concrete – handy for working late nights and extended hours in a packed gig setting.

An IP68 rating mean devices are dust proof and water resistant – the latter up to 1.5 metres of fresh water, for up to 30 minutes – ensuring handsets withstand even the hardiest of environments, weather – and dare we say it, drink spillages.

Bespoke technology

In addition to Rugged’s built-in qualities, Samsung smartphones and tablets allow for innovative business ideas to come alive. Future Yards’ light and sound mixing internship, for example, runs through a purpose-built app that keeps students connected with their tutor, and on top of their course notes, lesson plans and attendance schedules.

Each device comes with Samsung’s Galaxy Enterprise Edition, allowing companies to distribute devices securely among employees for extended use wherever they are based. There needn’t be worries about security breaches or a lack of technical support. Instead, productivity, flexibility and forward-thinking can be at the heart of every operation.
