TobyMac Releases New Song, Says it’s the First Time He Could ‘Scream Hope’ following His Son’s Untimely Death

Christian music artist TobyMac has just released a new single and music video titled “Help Is on the Way (Maybe Midnight).” TobyMac said the song marks the first time he can scream hope since the tragic death of his son Truett McKeehan in 2019.

According to the former D.C. Talk member, the song, which is about how God always comes through, even in the darkness and cold, is the first mostly positive song TobyMac has released since his son’s death. For a while he was writing “sad teary-eyed ballad-y songs,” TobyMac explained in an exclusive interview with Reel Faith.

According to The Christian Post, During the interview, TobyMac told the outlet that he asked God if he was only going to write sad music for the rest of his life.

“That was all I had in me. I just started asking God, ‘What is going on? Is that all I’m going to be able to write? For the rest of my life?” he recalled asking God. This song, the musician said, was God’s answer. TobyMac shared that the beginnings of a chorus that brought him reassurance came to him when he was reading a verse in Psalms about God “rolling up his sleeves” to come to our rescue.

“What an image to hold on to, that the God of all creation is rolling up his sleeves on my behalf,” Tobymac told Reel Faith. “And I just, I just held on to that and started writing immediately. I had no music yet, just melody and a lyric in my head. ‘Help is on the Way (Maybe Midnight)’ is the first time I think I felt sort of a turnaround where I could express hope. I felt hope through it all. But (the song) is the first time I could express it in an artistic, creative way. The first time I could scream hope from the mountaintop.”

The song sounds somewhat similar to TobyMac’s songs Hello Future and I Just Need U from his The Elements album. With a slight marching beat driving the song forward and lyrics about God being the believer’s solution in difficult times. The lyrics “It may be midnight or mid-day/ He’s never early, never late/ He gon’ stand by what He claimed/ I lived enough life to say… (Say, say, say)/ Help is on the way.”

The song also blends in the more orchestral aspects used in The Elements. You can listen to Help Is on the Way on all major music streaming platforms, including YouTube.
