Tireless Tyler Onyango catches the eye in Everton’s evolving under-23s side


Almost 70 minutes were on the clock in Everton Under-23s’ recent Premier League 2 match against Chelsea when their tireless midfielder embarked on yet another lung-busting run.

A fast counter had developed. Anthony Gordon’s receipt of the ball on the left flank was Tyler Onyango’s cue to motor. And motor he did.

Gordon has made a name as one of the quickest players in Everton’s first team since breaking into the senior squad but Onyango, a rangy 17-year-old central midfielder standing comfortably over 6ft, matched the run pace for pace, his long, loping stride eating up the turf at Southport’s Pure Stadium.

As Gordon made his way towards the edge of the box, committing yet another defender in the process, his teenage compatriot curved his run behind the Chelsea lines to meet a precise through ball and prod home through the legs of goalkeeper Karlo Ziger.
