Remington Park canceled the ninth race of the card Friday night due to smoke and signs of a fire near the kitchen area of the jockeys’ quarters, just above the saddling paddock.
No one was injured in the emergency situation. The Oklahoma City Fire Department arrived during the saddling of the horses in the paddock and immediately began assessing the situation.
“Due to the safety of horsemen, and horses involved in the ninth race, we cleared the paddock building and the saddling paddock,” said Remington Park vice president of racing operations Matt Vance.
The area near the kitchen filled with smoke which moved into the ventilation system of the building. The fire department investigated the signs of a possible fire in the area. Due to the possible threat and for the safety of people and animals in the immediate area, the building was cleared and the horses for race nine were released to return to their barns as the final race was canceled.
