This wasn’t how Dwayne Haskins envisioned his first time playing in an NFL game


EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — When Dwayne Haskins envisioned playing in his first NFL game, he figured the coaching staff would pull him aside on the first day of the week to let him know. He’d be able to prepare as early as possible. His family would be in attendance to watch.

He didn’t picture it being in the stadium located an hour from where he raised or against the team he grew up rooting for. That wasn’t how this was supposed to go.

But after a week-long controversy regarding how prepared he is and whether coach Jay Gruden and the coaching staff were putting him in the best position to succeed, he was thrust into Washington’s game Sunday against the New York Giants. With little more than eight minutes left in the first half, offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell told Haskins if the offense didn’t convert, then he’d be going in the game.
