The Lieutenant registers his first stakes victory in the All American at Golden Gate Fields
Less than a week after four stallions were murdered on its premises – including shuttle stallion The Lieutenant, a half-brother to Triple Crown winner Justify – Haras Barlovento in Peru has announced it will exit the breeding industry.
The farm made the announcement Tuesday on in its Instagram feed. Haras Barlovento was the target of an invasion on Saturday which resulted in the deaths of stallions The Lieutenant, Cyrus Alexander, Kung Fu Mambo and Timely Advice, along with the theft of some other materials on the property. It is believed that the horses were killed for their meat by a group of eight intruders.
“The best years of the farm were to come,” the translated post read, laying out that the first Southern Hemisphere foals by Kung Fu Mambo, Cyrus Alexander, and The Lieutenant, would arrive in the coming years. “These luxurious and helpless animals were killed by ignorant, evil and unscrupulous people. Not only did they kill them, they killed our illusion, motivation, passion … they took away our dreams.
“Barlovento will sell its three remaining generations and we will close the doors of our farm,” the statement continued. “Our hope is that champions of those next generations will come out so that Barlovento can leave as it should be …. in style.”
In the statement, the farm details that the stallions were located on a tract of land that was easily accessible to automobile traffic, in the event one of the horses should need to be hauled to a veterinary clinic. The invaders took advantage of this vulnerability and used the same path to move throughout the property.
Haras Barlovento – translated to Windward Farm – approaches its 68th year of operation in 2020. As it nears dispersal, the farm’s broodmare band includes mares by Harlan’s Holiday, Giant’s Causeway, Smart Strike, Candy Ride, Unbridled, Johannesburg, Kitten’s Joy, Malibu Moon, Exchange Rate, Quiet American, Freud, Broken Vow, Vindication, Dynaformer, Violence, Mineshaft, Lookin At Lucky, Stormy Atlantic, Forest Wildcat, Sky Mesa, Pure Prize, and Grand Slam. Many of them are in-foal to the slain stallions.
“We believe that with what happened we have lost many, but the most painful thing is to live every second with the pain of what was done with our four stallions,” the statement read. “Hopefully the authorities of Peru will find these criminals and receive the punishment they deserve. They do not know the damage and pain they have caused.”
