‘They sweat, I sweat’: Lakers assistant Phil Handy put in work for another ring


The reason Phil Handy is one of the most effective assistant coaches and player development guys in the NBA is that he’s not there to kiss anybody’s behind.

“One, it’s not about being friends,” Handy said on this week’s “Hoops, Adjacent” episode of The Athletic NBA Show. “My relationships with players, any player that I’ve ever built with, whether it be in the NBA or in my private business, has 100 percent been through the work. It’s about building. For me, I call it real authentic trust. You build that through the work that you do. And I’ve always found that players respect you as a coach. When I step on the floor — they sweat, I sweat. That’s my mentality. I’m trying to, one, coach you on what I see. Going back to the collaboration of, what areas do you want to improve on? How can I help you? What do you want to get better? And we can tackle those things.
