Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has aimed a dig at Manchester United over their position in the Premier League table.

Gerrard’s former club have enjoyed a brilliant campaign so far and look well on course to win their first title since 1990.

However, it’s been a very different story for fierce rivals United, who sit 24 points behind the Reds in eighth.

Rangers boss Gerrard is currently in a title race of his own, heading into Sunday’s Old Firm derby five points behind Celtic.

And he couldn’t resist making a jibe at United when speaking about Scotland’s biggest rivalry.

The former midfielder said: ‘I suppose it had many similarities but it’s not necessarily a derby match, Liverpool vs Manchester United. I think the rivalry comes from success, the two most successful teams in England so that’s another similarity to up here in the Old Firm.

‘I think the Liverpool vs Everton match is more similar in terms of the bitterness and hatred and bragging rights in the local community but Manchester is 40 minutes, one hour away, and obviously Manchester United are not at the top of the table anymore so there’s another difference for you.’

Celtic have won 11 games in a row in the league but Gerrard believes his Rangers team can bring that run to an end.

‘We are going to Parkhead in good form and good shape. We know it will be a very tough match, they have a very strong home record,’ he continued.

‘But we played Celtic a few weeks ago and put a good show on, gave a good account of ourselves.

‘I expect us to go there with confidence and belief we can get a result.

‘We have a game in hand, so I’m not really too concerned about gaps. I’m concerned with my team winning football matches.’
