The Wizards’ Ish Smith has a chance at a record no one wants to break


The Wizards signed Ish Smith in 2015 knowing they were going to cut him. Washington already had 15 players on its roster, but it needed Smith for training camp. And Smith needed a job.

He was entering only the sixth year of his career at the time, which meant he probably hadn’t unpacked his suitcase in half a decade. The Wizards were his tenth team. He had no choice but to hope there would be more. This stint was inevitably ending with a release at the finale of training camp. He wanted another job. He’s had four more since.

But by Smith’s standards, that’s stability.

He has now played for (take a deep breath if you’re reading out loud) the Rockets (twice), Grizzlies, Warriors, Magic, Bucks, Suns, Thunder, Pelicans (twice), 76ers (twice), Pistons and Wizards (twice). That’s 11 franchises, one short of the all-time record. NBA teams can make trades for the first time in nine months starting on Monday. He’s not trying…
