'The View' cheers coronavirus crackdowns across U.S.: 'You can't leave it up to the people'

“The View” co-hosts on Tuesday cheered the wave of coronavirus crackdowns in multiple states across the country, with Sara Haines arguing that people can’t be trusted to do the right thing when it comes to mitigating the virus.

The comments came after “The View” played a clip of Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds announcing new restrictions, including the state’s first mask mandate, a 15-person limit on indoor social gatherings, and a 10 p.m. curfew for bars and restaurants. The state joins more than a dozen others rolling back reopening plans and tightening restrictions amid the widespread uptick in coronavirus cases.

“Frankly, I want to start by saying thank you to all of these governors and mayors that are finally heeding the call that people are dying,” Whoopi Goldberg said. “And so I’m grateful that they finally got here.”

“It’s about time,” Joy Behar chimed in.

Sara Haines, however, said she’s not confident the new crackdowns will influence public opinion.

“It reminds me of the vice presidential debate when Mike Pence said, ‘We like to leave it up to the people.’ You can’t leave it up to the people. We learned that the hard way,” she said. “People are wearing their masks but I realized that’s where I’ve been and the people around me are doing the right thing. That is not the case across the country.”

Ms. Haines said part of the problem with shaping public opinion surrounding the virus is with the “optics” after several politicians, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, recently found themselves in hot water for apparently flouting their own rules.

“Optics matter, and we cannot have our politicians saying, ‘Do as I say not as I do.’ That bothers me,” Ms. Haines said.
