WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States has imposed sanctions on Zimbabwean Minister of State Security Owen Ncube for believable information about his involvement in ,quot;gross human rights violations,,quot; US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Friday.

Pompeo said in a statement that Washington was concerned that the Zimbabwean government had used state-sanctioned violence against demonstrators, opposition leaders and union leaders.

Two years after the fall of Zimbabwe, long-time ruler Robert Mugabe by the army and President Emmerson Mnangagwa, people are still struggling with triple-digit inflation and a lack of staples such as fuel.

Doctors were taken to the streets last month after Peter Magombeyi, her union leader and one of the organizers of efforts to claim higher wages for state doctors disappeared.

Ncube said at the time that Magombeyi, case was treated as a disappearance rather than a kidnapping, as his colleagues claimed.

Human rights groups have reported more than 20 cases of kidnapping of activists by state security forces since January. The government denies any involvement.
