Families are forever, MomTok lives on — and “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” has officially been renewed for 20 new episodes at Hulu, which means a second and possibly third season of the show. The next installment, according to Hulu, will premiere this spring, and production begins next week. The renewal of “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” was a no-brainer: As Variety previously reported, the series’ full-season drop on Sept. 6 immediately became Hulu’s most-watched unscripted premiere this year, beating out other Hulu original content like “The Kardashians,” as well as ABC’s reality offerings such as “The Bachelor.” In Nielsen’s numbers for the week of its premiere, “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” ranked at No. 7 on the streaming originals chart, based on only three days of data. Also? Season 1 ended on a literal cliffhanger, so fans need to know what comes next.
The series follows a group of Utah women — active members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who also became well-known for producing viral content TikTok — in the aftermath of Taylor Frankie Paul’s May 2022 confession that she and her now ex-husband had been “soft swinging” with other LDS couples in their friend circle. Though none of the other swingers agreed to be on the show, it appears, Paul was flanked by MomTok castmates Mayci Neely, Demi Engemann, Jen Affleck, Jessi Ngatikaura, Layla Wessel, Mikala Mathews — and Whitney Leavitt, who announced early in the season that she didn’t actually consider herself to be a friend of Paul’s, and later dramatically left the groupchat. (In Variety reporter Anna Tingley’s recent interview with Neely and Paul, Neely said Leavitt isn’t close with any of the cast anymore, and “I don’t think anyone would want her back in MomTok.”)
In that vein, today’s renewal announcement did not include any details about who will be in the second season’s cast. When the new season of “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” starts production in Utah imminently, we will, we hope, catch up with whatever is going on with Paul, who has proven to be an absolute lightning rod. At the end of the pilot episode — which was filmed in winter 2023 — Paul was arrested for assault following a domestic violence incident with her on-and-off boyfriend, Dakota Mortensen (illustrated through body cam footage and audio from the police who responded to the call). When cameras picked up officially to begin filming the series, however, Paul was pregnant, and Mortensen was the father. Throughout the first season, viewers watched Paul struggle with Mortensen, who when you squint, looks like a human red flag — and the previously mentioned cliffhanger was about whether he had cheated on her (again). Paul gave birth in March, and she and Mortensen were still together in the initial press tour for the show last month. In her recent TikToks, however, Paul seems to be indicating that she’s broken up with him.
In the announcenement, Walt Disney Television’s Rob Mills, executive vice president, unscripted and alternative entertainment, added his enthusiastic endorsement: “There was a philosophical question raised in Season 1 which was ‘Can #MomTok survive this?’ The answer unequivocally is yes! Spring 2025 get your dirty sodas ready!”
