The Right Horse Initiative Awards $100,000 Grant To Rehome Louisiana Thoroughbreds

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program, a 501(c)3 nonprofit equine adoption organization specializing in racehorse aftercare, has been awarded a grant to expand their program into Louisiana. The WaterShed Animal Fund, through its Right Horse Initiative, awarded the $100,000 grant to New Vocations to support opening a new facility and rehoming 50-plus retiring Thoroughbreds annually.

Opening a facility in Louisiana brings New Vocations’ total to eight facilities in five states. The new program in Louisiana will be a collaborative effort with multiple racetracks, management companies, jockeys and horsemen and grow to serve up to 100 horses annually.

“We saw that there is a critical need in Louisiana to provide retiring racehorses a place to rehab and eventually be rehomed, as well as continually increasing demand for adoptable Thoroughbreds nationwide. We are thrilled to be undertaking a collaborative effort to provide good options for horses in the region,” stated Thoroughbred Program Director, Anna Ford. Lending support for the expansion is retired champion jockey Rosie Napravnik, who is now a trainer and advocate for off-track Thoroughbreds.

As a partner in The Right Horse Initiative, New Vocations is focused on helping at-risk horses in the United States by massively increasing horse adoption. The New Vocations Racehorse Adoption program focuses on rehabbing, retraining and rehoming retiring Thoroughbred and Standardbred racehorses. The majority of the horses transition through their Laurelville, Ohio and Lexington, Kentucky facilities, with additional locations in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania and Fort Edward, New York. In the 25 years since founding, New Vocations has successfully helped over 6,000 racehorses find their next careers and homes.

“At The Right Horse Initiative, we are focused on identifying areas where we can make the biggest impact for at-risk horses,” said Christy Counts, President of The Right Horse Initiative. “New Vocations has been a pioneer and champion in racehorse aftercare, so we are thrilled to be able to empower them to make a difference in this important community.”
