The NBA’s golf obsession and possibility of cross-sports appeal


Sunday’s “The Match: Champions for Charity” was a roaring success, a hilariously humanizing event that spotlighted Tom Brady’s imperfections, Peyton Manning’s sense of humor and Charles Barkley’s effortless broadcasting touch. Everyone was a bit out of place, save for Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, and yet the event brought a sense of normalcy to the millions who tuned in. Golf, though famously cloistered, can be easy to relate to. Our greatest quarterbacks can suffer like the typical weekend hacker, ripped pants and all.  

Mickelson has intimated that the NBA might be the next sport to showcase, specifically Michael Jordan and Steph Curry. Hopefully, this or something like it can happen sooner rather than later. As pro basketball tries to get back online in a Walt Disney bubble, the league’s golf obsession could yield some great, relatively safe entertainment.
