‘The most dominant defender in the world’: Rudy Gobert earns his second consecutive DPoY Award


As it stands, the NBA is a guard- and small forward-driven commodity.

Looking at the consensus best players in the league, there would probably be only two big men — Joel Embiid and Anthony Davis — getting enough votes to merit inclusion. The top five picks of the NBA Draft featured one non-perimeter player in Zion Williamson. Of the top 10 picks, only Jaxon Hayes is a true center.

The league, simply put, is not set up for a traditional big to succeed. That’s why guys who started as back-to-the-basket behemoths — Brook Lopez — morphed into volume 3-point shooters. In this league, you pace and space. In this league, if you don’t play on the perimeter, man, your other skill set better be special.

It’s a reason Rudy Gobert can and should be proud of what he’s been able to accomplish. He’s less than 48 hours from his 27th birthday, and he’s just become the 10th player to win the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year…
