The mix of talent and mechanics that makes up Spencer Rattler’s throwing motion


NORMAN, Okla. — Watch the way Spencer Rattler throws the ball. Pick any one of his passes from Oklahoma’s 48-0 season-opening win Sept. 12 against Missouri State and study it.

Rattler’s body remains composed and compact, even when the freshman quarterback is under pressure or scrambling. His head barely moves, and he takes just a small, sudden step with his front foot before throwing. He uses his back foot to gain acceleration.

His right arm doesn’t take a big, looping path; instead it often looks like just a quick flick of his wrist.

“It’s a combination of some natural ability, and then I just think a lot of reps over the years,” said Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley. “I mean, it’s kinda like a golf swing.
