The Match III tracker: Mickelson, Barkley lead Curry, Manning at the turn

Thanksgiving may be over, but there’s still plenty to be thankful for, including The Match — the gift that keeps on giving.

In the third edition of the series, The Match: Champions for Change follows two-time Super Bowl winning quarterback Peyton Manning and three-time NBA Champion Steph Curry team up against five-time major champion Phil Mickelson and NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley in a modified alternate shot match play format.

Each competitor has chosen at least one HBCU to receive donations from various on-course challenges.

Keep up with everything happening in The Match III at Stone Canyon in Oro Valley, Arizona, with our hole-by-hole recap below.

The first tee shots will be hit shortly after 3 p.m. ET.

Hole 10 – Mickelson, Barkley lead, 4 up

Par 5, 622 yards

Phil and Chuck continue to outplay Steph and Peyton. Curry the water with his tee shot while Mickelson and Barkley found fairways. Mickelson and Barkley kept their mojo going to win the first hole on the back nine and go 4 up. Maybe TNT should get those Law & Order re-runs ready.

Hole 9 – Mickelson, Barkley lead, 3 up

Par 3, 177 yards

Chuck set Phil up for a nice tap in here. From the edge of the green, Barkley had great speed on his putt to land about one foot from the pin. Following from Curry’s tee shot, Manning used the team’s second shot and went a little wide. Both sides chose to forgo their tap ins for par and tied the hole. Mickelson and Barkley are 3 up at the turn.

Hole 8 – Mickelson, Barkley lead, 3 up

Par 4, 340 yards

Will Chuck and Phil blow a 3-1 lead? Sorry, Steph.

Manning’s approach shot set Curry up for a birdie putt and the pair MVPs won their first hole since No. 1 to sit 3 down through eight.

Hole 7 – Mickelson, Barkley lead, 4 up

Par 5, 554 yards

Chuck wants his bosses to get some Law & Order episodes ready to roll in about five more holes. Barkley and Mickelson win another one to go 4 up through seven holes, thanks to some lousy putting by Curry and Manning. If the former NFL and current NBA star want to keep this match going, some putting adjustments are going to be needed.

Hole 6 – Mickelson, Barkley lead, 3 up

Par 3, 145 yards

“Your colleagues are disrespecting you,” was the refrain Mickelson repeated on the sixth hole. Chuck’s NBA on TNT colleagues – Ernie Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith – joined the broadcast to roast Barkley’s putting, outfit and fitness level. Shaq even said he had a $100,000 bet on Curry and Smith said he brought his putter on camera to teach Barkley to putt mid-Match. The hole ended in a tie. Mickelson and Barkley lead 3 up through six. More importantly: Curry and Manning put a stop to Mickelson and Barkley’s four-hole winning streak.

Hole 5 – Mickelson, Barkley lead, 3 up

Par 4, 423 yards

“I want you to show me some zen stuff here. Get connected.” That’s what Mickelson told Barkley as the NBA Hall of Famer putted from the edge of the green. The ball rolled just to the left of the hole and stopped about three feet back. Mickelson avoided a lip out and the team of Mickelson and Barkley goes 3 up through five.

Hole 4 – Mickelson, Barkley lead, 2 up

Par 4, 374 yards

That’s three in a row for Chuck and Phil. Team Manning/Curry needs to work on putting speed as The Match continues to catch up. With the team’s third shot from behind the green on No. 4, Curry’s putt for birdie went a little too fast and sailed to the left of the pin. After being coached by Mickelson on the green, Barkley nearly missed an approximately 15-foot putt for birdie as the ball stopped rolling about six inches from the hole. Mickelson tapped in for the win on the hole after Manning missed his putt.

Hole 3 – Mickelson, Barkley lead, 1 up

Par 4, 304 yards

With the hole location is the back right of the green, Mickelson sank a putt from four feet to win the hole and go 1 up on Manning and Curry. Barkley had a chance to make his putt before Mickelson, missed and beat himself up a bit.

Hole 2 – Tied

Par 5, 559 yards

Team Manning/Curry almost eagled No. 2 on the team’s third shot, Manning’s second, when the ball lipped out on the second hole. Curry picked up Manning’s near miss for the team’s fourth shot but missed the putt for birdie. Mickelson took advantage of the missed putt and sank his putt for birdie. The Match is tied through two.

Hole 1 – Curry, Manning lead, 1 up

Par 5, 426 yards

Chuck has a new swing he debuted on the first tee, surprising everyone. But it wasn’t enough the win the hole. Barkley missed a short par putt to tie the par-4 hole, giving way for Manning to make his putt for par. Team Manning/Curry lead 1 up through one.
