The Kelly Oubre Jr. effect and why the Warriors might look harder at Damion Lee


The Warriors are 6-6, but it’s a fortunate 6-6, seeing as their point differential is -4. In order to prevent the season from going the wrong direction, tough decisions are likely in order. One potential decision is both obvious and difficult. Yes, he’s hit more shots over the last couple of games and yes, for once, the starters weren’t the main issue in that last loss to the Denver Nuggets, but the Kelly Oubre Jr. issue remains.

It’s an issue, rather than an easy decision, because the Warriors have invested tens of millions in luxury tax money into the Oubre addition. Yes, in an idealized NBA, this would have no bearing on lineup choices, but teams are always going to try and get more out of the players they invested the most in. In the specific case of the Warriors, they don’t have many avenues for massive improvement outside of the 25-year-old Oubre taking a leap.
