The Iconic Mandarin Oriental Bangkok Unveils River Wing Renovation

One of the best luxury hotels in Thailand’s capital, Mandarin Oriental Bangkok is also arguably one of the finest in the world. Set on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, the iconic property provides an unparalleled level of service and is home to top-notch facilities such as a five-star spa and the creative, award-winning Bamboo Bar. Now, after the most extensive renovation in the legendary hotel’s 143-year history, the grande dame is getting ready to unveil a new look.

Following the refurbishment of its Authors’ and Garden Wings in 2016, the River Wing was closed this past March for a refresh. The tower will now reopen on November 11 to welcome guests into its sumptuous new quarters. A big component of the project was to decrease the number of rooms to add more square footage to each of the accommodations. In addition to that the decor has been changed to create a lighter and airier atmosphere. Now you’ll find soothing blue accents, whitewashed wood paneling, textured linen drapes, and beautiful fabrics by Jim Thompson, the American expat that has been credited for saving Thailand’s dying silk industry in the 50s. Majority of the guestrooms will also feature furnished balconies for you to take in views of the river.

With the River Wing update also comes a new set of luxurious suites. The Selandia Suite, for example, features two bedrooms, a living room, dining area, and a study. Paying homage to the eponymous ship that traveled between Copenhagen and Bangkok in the early 20th century, it’s a fun option for anyone looking for an accommodation that hearkens back to the city’s past as Thailand’s main international port. Then there’s also the Oriental Suite, which now claims the title as the hotel’s largest guestroom. Measuring at over 4,000 square feet, the penthouse is located on the top floor of the River Wing and boasts a wraparound terrace, two bedrooms, a private dining room, an entertainment room, multiple seating areas, and a kitchen.

In addition to the redesigned rooms the lobby has been renewed and the property’s two pools have been relandscaped to include more relaxation areas and cabanas for guests to enjoy. And while the Verandah, Riverside Terrace, and Lord Jim’s were revamped as well during the renovation, Mandarin Oriental Bangkok will also be adding a new restaurant to its already extensive portfolio. For the first time ever, chef Takagi Kazuo of two-Michelin-starred Kyoto Cuisine Takagi is bringing his Kyoto-style cuisine to the Thai capital with Kinu by Takagi. The 10-seat dining room will open on November 15 as one of the most exclusive spots in town. Offering two seatings per night, guests will sit around at a counter where they’ll have a front-row seat to the preparation of what promises to be an exquisite kaiseki dinner. The 12-course meal will marry seasonal Thai and Japanese ingredients, which can be paired with an extensive selection of fine sake.

With all of these adjustments it’s fair to say that Mandarin Oriental Bangkok will continue to be a discerning traveler’s favorite.
