The Vancouver Canucks and the Calgary Flames played Game 54 of their pandemic-abbreviated regular season Sunday night at Rogers Arena.
At least we think it was played at Rogers Arena. We’re told it was, but it’s hard to tell with the way the game was swept under the rug by the NHL and the Canucks’ own broadcast partners.
For the purpose of extraneous hockey accounting and satisfying commitments to broadcasters and sponsors, among other reasons, Calgary and Vancouver will play two more pointless contests through the middle of this week. Then, and only then, will the rest of the Stanley Cup playoffs begin.
Something odd happened Sunday evening in Vancouver, though. Somewhere along the way, a sad, embarrassing footnote on the NHL’s season became … a ton of fun to watch?
The Canucks came back and washed away a 5-1 Flames lead in the third period.
