Texas upsets No. 6 Oklahoma State in OT as Big 12’s last undefeated team falls

Sam Ehlinger found Joshua Moore for the go-ahead touchdown and the Texas defense sealed the game with a fourth-down sack as the Longhorns upset No. 6 Oklahoma State 41-34 in overtime on Saturday, handing the Big 12’s last undefeated team its first loss.

Oklahoma State outgained Texas 530-287 and held the Longhorns to 2-of-15 on third down, but four turnovers — and a couple of critical penalties — prevented the Cowboys from moving to 6-0. The Longhorns scored 21 points off OSU turnovers.

Texas came back from an 11-point, second-half deficit to take a 34-31 lead when Ehlinger found Jake Smith for a go-ahead, 12-yard touchdown with 4:27 left.

But after trading punts, Oklahoma State drove 63 yards in 68 seconds, tying the game with six seconds to go when Alex Hale kicked a 34-yard field goal to force overtime.

Texas went 25 yards in four plays in overtime, benefiting from a pass interference penalty. The Longhorns improved to 2-1 in overtime this season.

The Cowboys took their largest lead, 31-20, on a touchdown pass from Spencer Sanders to Tylan Wallace with eight minutes left in the third quarter. The Longhorns immediately cut the lead to five when D’Shawn Jamison returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown.

The teams traded punts from there until OSU’s fourth turnover, a lost fumble by LD Brown in Texas territory with 12:15 left.

Ehlinger led the Longhorns on a 15-play, 59-yard drive lasting nearly eight minutes to take the lead. Texas faced a fourth down three times: The first ended with a 15-yard penalty for roughing the kicker. The other two ended with Ehlinger completions — including a go-ahead score to Smith on a fourth-and-7 from the OSU 12.

Ehlinger completed 18 of 34 passes for 169 yards and three touchdowns.

Oklahoma State was paced by Sanders, who passed for 400 yards and four touchdowns, and Wallace, who caught 11 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns. But Sanders threw an interception and lost two fumbles in the first half.

Oklahoma State falls to 3-1 in conference play, a half-game behind Kansas State (4-1) and Iowa State (4-1) at the top of the Big 12. Texas won its second consecutive game after dropping two in a row earlier this season.

This is a developing story. More to come.
