Texas switches quarterbacks; Casey Thompson to replace Hudson Card vs. Rice

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian made a quarterback change on Monday, announcing that junior Casey Thompson will start the Longhorns’ game Saturday vs. Rice in place of Hudson Card.

Card, a redshirt freshman, started the first two games of the season, a win over Louisiana and a 40-21 loss at Arkansas on Saturday. Thompson played in the second half and finished both games.

After a strong debut, Card struggled vs. the Razorbacks, completing only 8-of-15 passes for 61 yards and no touchdowns. He also lost a fumble. In the 10 drives Card engineered Saturday, the Longhorns generated only 136 offensive yards.

Thompson led the Longhorns to two touchdown drives in the fourth quarter against the Razorbacks, a week after leading Texas to 10 fourth-quarter points against the Ragin’ Cajuns.

Card and Thompson engaged in an offseason competition for the starting job, one Sarkisian called the closest he has overseen in his coaching career.
