Texas blows double-digit lead for second week in a row in loss to Oklahoma State

For the first time in its history, No. 12 Oklahoma State notched a third consecutive win over a ranked team, crawling out of a double-digit hole to defeat No. 25 Texas 32-24 on Saturday at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. The Cowboys (6-0) defeated Kansas State and Baylor in their last two games, both of which were ranked when they met.

Texas allowed a double-digit lead to slip away for the second consecutive week after relinquishing a 21-point lead last week in a loss to Oklahoma in the Red River rivalry. The Longhorns fell to 4-3 with the loss.

Oklahoma State struggled offensively for much of the first three quarters, as the offense accounted for nine of the team’s 16 points in that span. Six of those points came as the result of drives extended by Texas personal foul penalties.

Longhorns defensive tackle Keondre Coburn committed a horse-collar tackle in the first quarter and edge rusher Ray Thornton was flagged for roughing the passer in the third. Both penalties came at the end of failed third-down conversions for the Cowboys, and they took advantage by netting 88 combined yards and two field goals on those series.

Texas, which was leading 17-3 midway through the second quarter, threatened to take a three-score advantage. But Oklahoma State safety Jason Taylor II picked off quarterback Casey Thompson and returned it 85 yards for a touchdown to trim the deficit and OSU trailed only 17-13 at the half. The Longhorns opened the second half with a five-play, 80-yard drive, capped by a 38-yard Bijan Robinson touchdown run to go up 24-13, but the Texas offense went dark after that, failing to convert a first down in the next five drives.

Oklahoma State’s offense found itself in the fourth quarter, putting together three scoring drives. Quarterback Spencer Sanders found Brennan Presley for a 4-yard touchdown, Tanner Brown converted a 29-yard field goal and Spencer added a 10-yard touchdown run to give the Cowboys a 32-24 lead.

The Oklahoma State defense, which came into the weekend third in the Big 12, allowing just 18.6 points per game, put forth an impressive second-half effort. After yielding 225 first-half yards, the Cowboys held Texas to just 91 yards in the final two quarters. Upon taking the lead in the fourth, they forced a turnover on downs and intercepted Thompson a second time to secure the win.

Jaylen Warren had 193 yards rushing on 33 carries for Oklahoma State, and Robinson finished with 135 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries for Texas.
