During the preseason, Georgia Tech coach Geoff Collins didn’t answer questions about who would be his starting quarterback against Florida State in the season opener.

Jeff Sims certainly had that answer Saturday.

The true freshman from Florida made his Georgia Tech debut and helped lead the Yellow Jackets to a 16-13 win. Along the way, he came up with a couple of firsts:

• He is the first true freshman quarterback for the program to win a season opener.

• He was the first true freshman to start a season opener at quarterback for the program since Reggie Ball in 2003.

Sims also showed just how much this program has changed in Collins’ second season, completing 24-of-35 passes for 277 yards, including 15 completions and 181 yards in the first half.
