Tafur: The undefeated Raiders need their defense to start pulling its weight


The Raiders have a chance Sunday to start out 3-0 for the first time since 2002. And they definitely have a shot.

While Cam Newton has given the Patriots a shot of adrenaline after Tom Brady left, teams can run the ball against them — and elite running back Josh Jacobs is a big reason the Raiders have scored 34 points in each of their first two games.

But it’s very hard to keep scoring 34 points when you have to be constantly consumed with taking time off the clock because your defense is so bad.

The Raiders are giving up a whopping 6.7 yards per play this season, which is second-worst in the league. Some people are actually saying that the defense wasn’t awful Monday because the Saints scored only 24 points. Well, that’s because Drew Brees had one of the most inaccurate passing games of his career and the Saints had 10 penalties.
