Sweden vs Poland result: Sweden top Group E after late drama against Poland

The key moment

Sweden’s early lead shocked the Poles while calming their own nerves.

With only two minutes on the clock, Isak challenged for a high cross on the edge of the box, controlling superbly on his chest, on the leap.

It allowed Forsberg to collect before Isak took over again, and when the ball found its way back to Forsberg after a challenge, he nipped around Jan Bednarek to drill a finish into the far corner.

Player of the match

It was a terrific team effort from Sweden, but Poland’s main man Robert Lewandowski almost delivered the unthinkable for his country.

The Bayern Munich forward played the second half like a man possessed, scoring two fine goals, as he unsuccessfully attempted to drag his side away from elimination.

What does this mean?

While they might not be among the flashiest sides at Euro 2020, Sweden have shown themselves to be incredibly well-drilled.

They will be a tricky opponent for their likely next opponents, the Czech Republic, and after an impressive showing in the group-stages will fancy their chances to reach the quarter-finals.

It is the end of the road, however, for Poland.

Key statistic

Scored after just 81 seconds, Forsberg’s opener for Sweden was the second-fastest goal ever scored from the start of a European Championship match, after Dmitry Kirichenko for Russia versus Greece in 2004 (65 seconds).

What next?

Sweden have won Group E and will almost certainly face Czech Republic next. Spain, meanwhile, have come second and will face Croatia.

Despite respectable displays from Poland and Slovakia, however, they have both been eliminated from the tournament.
